Dolores Claiborne
Stephen King has made 3 strong and impressive female characters. He starts with Rose Daniels in Rose Madder and then he continues to develop these characters because there are mostly men in the novels.
And Dolores Claiborne belongs to this group of strong female characters. She avoided charges concerning the death of the husband about 30 years ago but now she is again under the control of law because of the death of Vera Donovan, her employer. Dolores was a maid of Vera at first but then she became a caretaker and was caring about Vera with her dementia.
And death of Vera was connected with the death of the husband who was murdered by Delores under a solar eclipse. Nobody had doubts that she was caring for the woman but a reader sees her as a brash person. Dolores made it for Selena, her daughter, she showed tenderness.
Dolores tells a detailed story about all circumstances which have lead to the death of Vera and the husband. The author has good described the voice of Dolores and a reader may have the feeling that he/she listens to her and her story. Due to the talent of King the reader will never guess that the story is told by man. The reader is plunged into the world of the main character that had overcome the difficulties of her marriage with a pedophile and had cared for the old woman with dementia. The mind of the readers is filled with the voice of Dolores and they realize all darkness of her life. Dolores tells the story as a wife, a caretaker and a mother in order the judges understand her state and feel sympathy who has trapped in this life situation.
Dolores Claiborne contains little horror and supernatural things. This story may remind some reader their own life and it is one more example of success of creativity of the author.
