Rose Madder
In four years King has written three novels which contained three various female characters who overcome the male characters. In Delores Claiborne the main heroine successfully stops her husband from molesting their daughter. Jessie Burlingame in Gerald´s Game gets rid of her husband who uses her as a sexual toy and nothing more.
Rose Daniels in Rose Madder suffers from a miscarriage after brutal beating of the Husband Norman. Nine years later Rose stares at the white bedspread with red bloody drop. She cannot stand it anymore and a reader also feels it, Rose decides to seize a credit card of her husband and run away.
She finds a shelter for battered women which is called Daughters and Sisters and then Rose wants to pawn the engagement ring. She realizes that she will not get needed money from this ring and she sells it just for some obscure piece of art named “Rose Madder”.
Rose meets a man in the pawn shop who is interested in Rose and it seems that the life will getting better. However, readers who read similar novels or saw films would guess there will be no happy ending or at least not all things will be going right.
Norman uses his skills of a police officer and he almost finds Rose leaving a bloody trail. But at this time Rose figures out that this piece of art which is without artist´s signature is more than just a piece of art. It has some connection with the supernatural world.
Of course Rose Madder may be not as exciting as Delores Claiborne but a reader will be in a chase which makes him/her read until the last word of the story. And in the end of the story a reader will fully realize the fate of Rose and this thing makes Rose Madder a worthwhile.
