The Green Mile
The Green Mile was Stephen King´s first novel that has gone to a series in 1996. The novel consisted of six books that published in soft cover at the price of two dollars for a piece. It was a big question whether such distribution method would work. It has worked only with Dickens´s books and comics, up to then. However, the risk has justified itself, and the touching and dramatic story hits the shelves and prompts readers to buy all books to the latest one.
The content of King´s stories, written of last years, is more dramatic and less horrific. The Green Mile, as well as his other drama novels, has proven King´s reputation not only as the author of horror—novels, but also as a storyteller of touching stories.
The events, described in the novel, take place in E Block of Cold Mountain Penitentiary. A place where the prisoners, sentenced to death penalty, were in the death row. The last mile runs the corridor that has been laid out by a green tile, the Green Mile. The corridor leads to an electric chair, Old Sparky. The narrator is Paul Edgecombe, security guard of Cold Mountain Penitentiary´s E Block.
A latest prisoner is John Coffey, the Black man, with a body of giant and a child—level mentality. He was sentenced to the death for murder of two little girls, twins. King does not slow down the intrigue and lets readers know what is unusual with Coffey indeed, or, if anything, with other residents of E Block.
Among other King´s novels, the Green Mile has the most heart—rending and touching finale, nevertheless, it is unusually real, and leaves the readers with a hope. The final of the novel is a true achievement for Stephen King, whereas the whole novel was serialized.
The rich characters created by King revive on pages of the novel. Undoubtedly, King´s fan and readers will appreciate the novel worthily.
